Takorn Tavornchotivong
Takorn Tavornchotivong is a textile artist and fashion designer, known for his unconventional approach in material and design. Takorn’s works often begin with his interest in finding creative ways to reuse waste materials. Although most of his works are centered around sustainability, he does not compromise for beauty. Takorn’s trademark is the subliminal way of transforming materials. He invented his signature interknit technique as a way to recycle waste yarns. This technique rarely leaves traces of the materials’ past lives.
His other ingenuity is reinterpreting traditional crafts. His collections made from Batik and Tammee are a masterpiece that combines local wisdom with a modern twist. One might not realize they are looking at the products of Thai traditional crafts. He designed Tammee fabrics with inspirations from the natural world such as butterfly wings and the ocean. Choosing the themes that are understood widely creates a sustainable working relationship between the local artisans and designers. Besides redesigning, his concern for local craftsmanship led him to research in depth about ways to make Batiks healthier and more sustainable for their creators. To keep the craft relevant and alive in modern time, he creatively invented a new technique, using patterns that require less wax drawing time such as modern imageries and ice-osmosis dying technique.
