Mini Sculpture: The Customs House (Rong Phasi Roi Chak Sam) is a historic riverside building along the Chao Phraya River, constructed during the reign of King Rama V. It served as a customs house for the collection of import and export duties under the “Roi Chak Sam” system, which imposed a 3% tax on the value of goods. The structure reflects European neoclassical architectural influences, distinguished by its arched facades and tall windows, emblematic of Siam’s golden era of international trade.
This artwork presents a fusion of the historical edifice with contemporary graffiti art. Street art motifs are integrated into the aged walls of the Customs House, symbolizing the tension and coexistence between the past and the present. The graffiti elements breathe new life into the architectural heritage, illustrating how modern society contributes to the evolving narrative of this landmark. This interplay highlights urban transformation and development, where rich historical contexts embrace new cultural influences. Through the language of art, the piece fosters a dialogue between history and modernity.
