Grand Cinema serves as a reflection of the past through contemporary art. Once a prominent cinema in the Charoenkrung area, Grand Cinema was a center of entertainment in its time. Although the cinema has since closed, the original structure and iconic signage remain, symbolizing the former glory and the city’s ongoing transformation.
This artwork presents a fusion of historic architecture with contemporary art, where the cinema’s signage is repurposed as the title of the exhibition, “Somewhere Else in the World: Charoenkrung.” This title represents a new perspective on the area’s history, while the installation of the exhibition signage on the building links the past to the present. Additionally, graffiti art brings vitality to the building, using colors, patterns, and techniques that embody street art, fostering a dialogue between the cinema’s aged structure and the creativity of modern art.
This work is not merely decoration but an integration of architectural memories and their reinterpretation through contemporary art, breathing new life into the Grand Cinema as a space for inspiration and a symbol of the city’s transformation.
