CV
Praween Piangchompu is a printmaking artist who possesses both technical and stylistic uniqueness. On the technical level, he has developed his own language using sandpaper and softer wood matrices. His method involves sanding a single sheet of wood matrix multiple times for printing different layers of colors. Each printed layer adds a nuanced dimension to the picture plain. Resulting from the act of sanding softly into the matrix, the colors are subtle and soft like a diffusing cloud. His works rarely show any clear cut line from a harsh stroke, but forms are suggested by placing different colors or values side by side. Although using a single matrix instead of multiple is seemingly simpler, in fact it requires precision from the artist as he cannot go back to redo or correct any mistakes in the previous layers. His soft sanding technique leaves no room for mistakes.
Piangchompu’s works strive to present physical space in relation to emptiness. It can also convey emptiness at the same time. The subtlety in his use of color creates the atmospheric perception. He usually draws inspiration from his inner observation, emotions, and personal sensibilities. The spaces in his work are not representational, but rather animated thoughts like fictional poetry. Piangchompu works have been included in many notable solo and group exhibitions all over the world such as The print prize of The 5th Guanlan International Print Biennial 2015, China; the winner of The Semi Grand-Prix, Tokyo International Mini-Print Triennial 2015, Japan; Gold prize award of the 2019 Ulsan International Woodcut Print Biennale, South Korea.
