Parichat Suphaphan was born in 1977 in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province, Thailand. She completed her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Visual Arts, specializing in Printmaking, at the Faculty of Painting, Sculpture and Graphic Arts, Silpakorn University. Currently, Parichat resides and works in Bangkok while holding the position of a lecturer and head of the Printmaking Department at the Faculty of Painting, Sculpture and Graphic Arts, Silpakorn University.
Suphaphan is interested in the representation of female identity. Her art challenges the norms and values surrounding sexual expression that are often dictated by societal trends, which vary across different eras. For this series of works, Suphaphan chose to portray women within the local culture of Central Thailand, particularly in her hometown of Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya. There she has observed and engaged with the rural way of life and the beauty of folk traditions during various occasions, such as temple fairs and community celebrations. Her admiration for the women involved in these events is reflected in her female characters. The women in Parichat’s works boldly define beauty on their own terms. They exhibit distinct identities and vibrant colors that express a joyousness differing from urban tastes. Her works convey an adaptation to society and the passage of time, while not abandoning the local traditions that have long existed.
Suphaphan received many recognitions, and regularly exhibited her works in solo and group exhibitions. Some of her solo exhibitions include: “Miss Pachi’s zap!,” The National Museum (Art Gallery), Bangkok, 2018; and “สะบ(ริ้)ง: Chicky Julazzy,” Ardel’s Third Place Gallery, Thonglor, Bangkok, 2015. Her works were included in many notable group exhibitions such as: “ศรัทธา: Faith Beyond Earth,” organized by Friends of Bangkok Art Biennial 2018, Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), Bangkok, 2018; and “Selfie,” Duke Contemporary Art Space, Gaysorn Plaza, Bangkok, 2017
