ABOUT ARTIST

Mike Gold is a gemologist and photographer based in Bangkok, Thailand and Miami, Florida. He seeks out unusual gems around Thailand and photographs them through a microscope to capture their vivid colors and intricate patterns. These striking images are printed on metallic archival-grade photography paper to create unique pieces of art.

He uses a Sony Mirrorless a6400 camera mounted to a Wild M7A stereo microscope. By tethering his camera to a computer and focus-stacking the images, he creates visuals with an enhanced depth of field that reveals hidden layers within each gem.

Mike Gold

Mike Gold is a gemologist and photographer based in Bangkok, Thailand and Miami, Florida. EDUCATION

Mike Gold attended GIA in Carlsbad, California for a gem identification and diamond grading course in 2019. While in class, he experienced the inner world of gemstones that can only be seen through a microscope. He was mesmerized by the unique beauty of each gemstone and took photographs every chance he could get. Once he graduated with his Graduate Gemologist certification, he immediately obtained a microscope and began taking professional photomicrographs.
