Khvay Samnang (b.1982) is of the most celebrated artists in Cambodia today. As part of his practice, Samnang spends extensive amounts of time engaging directly with the local communities in his effort to research and gain insight on the profound social issues that confronts Cambodia today.While exploring new perspectives and interpretations of history, as well as traditional cultural rituals and beliefs, Samnang uses humorous and symbolic gestures to present multiple layers of meaning through a variety of mediums, including sculptures that incorporate natural materials, as well as installations, video art, and performances in which he uses his own body, and the bodies of dancers.
Samnang is highly recognized for his international activities as an artist, presenting solo exhibitions in venues such as the Jeu de Paume (2015), Paris,France; CAPC Musée d’art contemporain de Bordeaux (2015), France, Haus der Kunst (2018), Munich, Germany; Tramway (2021) Glasgow, Scotland; ifa Gallery Stuttgart (2022) Germany; Tomio Koyama Gallery Tennoz (2024) Japan. He has also taken part in numerous international group exhibitions including Documenta 2017, and Document 2022 (as a member of Sa Sa Art Projects), Kassel, Germany; and a Collateral Event of the 60th International Art Exhibition, La Biennale de Venezia (2024), Itlay.
