ABOUT ARTIST

Kaewtrakan Julabon is a visual artist, known for her passion for rubber. She wasborn and raised in Nakhon Srithammarat, a southern province of Thailand where rubber plantation was a predominant industry. The common themes in her works include, but not limited to, local traditions, gender, and mind and body connection. Exploring the theme of the gendered body, she does not hesitate to express her concepts through different media including fashion. In her earlier works, she casted her own body using latex and presented the work in a performance. Later on as she became a mother, she expressed in her works the idea about the female body and its functions as a passage for another life, reaching its maximum capacity when used to nurture another being. Having been back at her hometown, she gets to explore more deeply into her own roots, culture, and her community. This interest dictates her to use rubber as the main material and to find different ways to push its boundary. Instead of traditionally making latex into a piece of fabric before turning it into other forms, she treats latex as paint. She mixes pigment into the latex before she applies it onto a flat surface to let it dry. This technique allows her more freedom in creating forms such as perforated designs similar to lace. Kaewtrakan is the founder of The Rubber Paradoxii. Currently, lives and works at See Din Nature & Creative Space in

Nakorn Srithammarat.
