HYUNG KOO KANG

강형구 화백은 강렬한 시선으로 인물초상을 그리는 하이퍼리얼리즘의 대가로 국내 뿐만이 아닌 해
외에서도 인정받는 블루칩 작가다. 일상적 소재를 사진과 같이 표현하는 극사실주의 기법으로 현대
한국 초상화의 지평을 넓혔다는 평을 받고 있다. 그러나 강 화백은 “하이퍼리얼리즘은 내 그림의
완성 요소에서 5분의 1정도만 차지할 뿐이다”고 말한다. 나머지 5분의 4를 차지하고 있는 것, 그건
바로 ‘작가의 상상력’에 의해 재창조된 것이다. 그래서 대형 화면에 표현한 특정, 불특정의 확대된
한 인물의 얼굴은 그 시대상을 반영하고 있다.
강 화백의 작품은 미국의 지미 카터 센터, 영국의 프랭크코헨 컬렉션, 잠실 올림픽 주경기장, 광주
시립박물관, 포항공대 등 국내외 유명 미술관들이 소장하고 있을 정도로 그 가치를 인정받고 있다.

Artist Hyung Koo Kang is a master of hyperrealism, known for his powerful depictions of
portraits. He is a blue-chip artistrecognized not only in Korea but also internationally. Kang is
praised for expanding the horizons of modern Korean portraiture with his hyperrealistic
technique, which portrays everyday subjects with photographic precision. However, Kang
states that “hyperrealism only accounts for about one-fifth of the completion of my
paintings.” Theremainingfour-fifthsarerecreatedby the”artist’s imagination.”Asaresult,the
magnifiedfaces of specific or unspecifiedindividualsdepictedon large canvases reflectthe
spiritofthetimes.
Kang’s works are highly regarded, being part ofthe collections ofrenowned institutions such
as the Jimmy Carter Center in the United States, the Frank Cohen Collection in the United
Kingdom,the Jamsil Olympic Main Stadium, Gwangju Museum ofArt,andPohang University
